THE STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN DISTINGUISHING BETWEEN ADVERBIAL PHRASES AND PREPOSITION IN DESCRIPTIVE TEXT AT THE EIGHTH GRADE OF SMPN 1 MONTONG GADING IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2011/2012

This study was an attempt to find the students’ ability in distinguishing between adverbial phrases and preposition in descriptive text at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Montong Gading in the school year 2011/2012. It was intended to identify the students’ achievement as follow: (1) What are the students’ ability in distinguishing between adverbial phrases and preposition in descriptive text at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Montong Gading in the school year 2011/2012? (2) To what extent the students’ ability in distinguishing between adverbial phrases and preposition in descriptive text at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Montong Gading in the school year 2011/2012?
This study was quantitative descriptive research. The target population of this study was the eighth graders of SMPN 1 Montong Gading in the school year 2011/2012. The populations of SMPN I Montong Gading especially at the eighth grade are 224 students. Because the research population was more than 100 students, so the researcher got 17% of 224 students which were 38 students. To describe the students’ ability, the researcher used descriptive text in finding the students’ ability. In the descriptive text, there were some questions that related to preposition and adverbial phrases. To know the students’ ability, the researcher used multiple choice tests to collect the data and the items of multiple choices were 30 items.
Based on the result of data analysis, the researcher found 2 students were included as very low category, 8 students were in low category, 22 students were in sufficient category, and 6 students were in high category. So the mean score of the students’ ability was 18,97, it was called average and the percentage of the students’ ability was 63%, it was called sufficient. It meant that the students’ ability in distinguishing between adverbial phrases and preposition in descriptive text at the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Montong Gading in the school year 2011/2012 correlatively were sufficient.
